Producer FAQs for Farm to School

Do I have to be Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) certified to sell my products to schools?

All the schools we work with currently require a documented food safety plan upon request that meets GAP certification or equivalent.

Do I need to package my products in a certain way for the schools?

Yes! The Farm to School Coordinator will work with you to determine the best specification to pack your products to sell to the schools. A good rule of thumb is to keep cases 40 pounds or less for lifting purposes.

How do I bring the Farm to School Program to my child's school?

Your child may already attend a school that participates in the Farm to School Program. Contact our Farm to School Coordinator for more information!

What kind of products are schools looking for?

Schools may be interested in purchasing a large variety of products including meats, produce, grains, maple syrup, honey and dairy.

How do I get paid for my goods?

The producer must provide each individual school district with an invoice that lists the products they purchased upon delivery and lists that the items were produced/processed in New York State. The district will then submit the invoice to their business office to be paid. There can often be as much as a month of lag time between the delivery date and when the producer can expect to receive payment.

What is the first step if I want to sell my products to a school?

Contact our Farm to School Coordinator and she can walk you through the process, step by step. Hannah Rion, hrion@rhnscny.org
