Overview of the Program

FaHN partners with Broome-Tioga BOCES Rock On Cafe and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County to coordinate a comprehensive Farm to School program across 15 school districts. Are you interested in learning about how these organizations collaborate to provide students with fresh, local products accompanied by an education on where their food comes from? NY Thursdays

NY Thursdays are a day that we celebrate NY farms by serving a menu showcasing all NY products. Broome-Tioga BOCES Rock On Cafe hosts two NY Thursdays a month throughout the school year. Would you like to learn more about NY Thursdays? Click here to see what these celebrations look like!

Culinary Experience

The Farm to School Culinary Experience was a training held at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. Nearly 200 food service staff members from across 15 school districts in Broome-Tioga BOCES had the chance to partake in this valuable professional development. Trainees had the opportunity to learn knife skills, cooking techniques, and test recipes for next school year using fresh NY produce. Click here to get a behind the scenes look at the week!

On the Farm

Our Farm to School program would not be possible without our local farmers. We rely on them to produce fresh, nutritous products to be served in the school cafeterias. The districts work with many farmers, both locally and across New York State. Want to know more about some of the farms we work with? Click here to hear from them yourself!

Education

Our Farm to School partners work hard to align Ag in the Classroom lessons with what is being served in our NY Thursday lunches. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County helps facilitate Farm to School Education in K-5 schools throughout Broome County. Click here to hear learn about the program for yourself!

Distribution

Our final video in our Farm to School Video Series focuses on how local products get from the farms to students' trays. Click here to see behind the scenes of distribution as well as the brand new Broome-Tioga BOCES Farm to School Truck.
